I’m Chiku, the Chirimen Hinoki Cypress or the Chamaecyparis obtusa. My evergreen shoots grow upright in irregular clusters of different shapes in bluish green tones. I'm basically a living and moving sculpture. I tend to retain clumps of seed cones in the spring time which may look like deformities but this is completely natural.Pinch off a leaf tip and crush it for the classic hinoki fragrance. My wood is lemon scented and rot-resistant, which is why you find me in Japanese temples and baths.
Remember I am an outdoor tree. Place me in a morning-sun or partial-shade location, and water me well by placing my pot in a bowl of water up to the rim. Do this about once a week, or when my pot feels about 1/2 lighter. I stay green all year, so you can enjoy my form even on the coldest days. In winter, put me in a protected, cold spot outdoors so that I can go dormant and feel rested come springtime. During the winter months, keep me in temperatures between 25 - 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
