The dragon and cloud planter was created using a technique called RUSU, popular in Seto City during the Edo period. Tatsuya Kato is the only ceramicist in Seto City who can reproduce this technique.

To create the negative impression, Kato-san hand carves the original design into a mold, usually wood or plaster. Then, a thin layer of clay is applied to the mold. Once it sets slightly, it’s carefully peeled off and transferred onto the planter surface before firing. Both clay thickness and timing is crucial to avoid cracks in the pattern, especially on the corner of the pot.

Tatsubon Pottery was started by Tatsuya Kato, a third generation potter living in the pottery village of Seto City, Japan. This town was made famous for traditionally providing works to the Emperor's family, and for pioneering specific glazes and techniques bearing the namesake of the village. Tatsuya specializes in using Edo period glazes, and is currently working on understanding the mysterious Rusu glaze. Similar to us, he likes crunchy snacks while working.
