I’m 'Dot' the Inkberry, also known as Appalachian Tea. I am a rapidly growing deciduous shrub native to the coastal plains of the eastern US where I am mainly found in sandy woods and adjacent to swamps and bogs. In the wild I can be 5 to 10 feet, but as a bonsai, trained in a pot I'll stay much smaller. My branches take well to wiring and shaping. In spring, the honey from my flowers is a popular favorite with honey bees.

I like morning sun and bright indirect light in the afternoon. Water me well about once a week, or when my pot starts to feel about 1/2 lighter. The best way to water is to submerge my pot up to the rim. Remember I am an outdoor tree.

In winter I like to rest up outside in a protected spot from November until spring, when my baby leaves start to appear again. During the winter months, keep me in temperatures between 30 - 50 degrees F.
