I’m Zen, the Japanese Elm or Zelkova, and native to Japan and Eastern China. I’m known for my fine-toothed leaves, graceful lines and attractive bark. I do best in full to partial sun conditions. You can water me once every 7-10 days, or more it it’s really hot.
To water, submerge my pot in water up to the rim for 20 minutes and let me drain thoroughly. Although I’m an outdoor plant, I can acclimate to indoor conditions with proper ventilation and light. Keep the window open or put me outside on nice days. In winter, keep me in a cool location far from heaters. If outdoors, protect me well from the winter winds.
Symbolism:
The main aspect of Elm symbolism is strength, wisdom and will & intuition. In Greek and Celtic folklore, the Elm is associated with death and passage to the Underworld. In terms of uses, Native American tribes used infusions from the inner root bark to treat colds, coughs, and fever.
